Candler offers lay courses for spring

Six short-term courses promoting a deeper understanding of faith issues are being offered in 1998-99 by faculty members of the Candler School. Held in the evenings or on weekends, the courses are conducted through the school's Lay Theology Institute (LTI).

LTI courses provide opportunity for personal growth regardless of religious or academic background by exploring Christian themes in an ecumenical context. Four of the courses meet from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. for six Tuesdays. The two weekend courses meet Friday evening and during the day on Saturday. The courses, instructors, dates and sites are as follows:

  • The Apocrypha, John Hayes, professor of Old Testament. Sept. 22-Oct. 27. Haygood Memorial United Methodist Church, 1014 E. Rock Springs Rd.
  • Contemporary Music and Worship, Rev. Barbara Day Miller, Marcy Assistant Dean of Worship. Oct. 13-Nov. 17. St. James United Methodist Church, 4400 Peachtree Dunwoody Rd.
  • A Fulfilled Life: A Study of the Sermon on the Mount, L. Bevel Jones, Bishop in Residence. Nov. 13-14. Simpsonwood Conference & Retreat Center, 4511 Jones Bridge Circle, Norcross. Overnight accommodations and meal-only options are available.
  • Striving to Be the Church: A Checklist for Congregations, John Freeman, assistant professor of practical theology. Jan. 12-Feb. 16. Church of the Atonement, 4945 High Point Rd., Sandy Springs.
  • The Gospel of Luke, Walter Wilson, assistant professor of New Testament. Feb. 23-March 30. Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Rd.
  • Images of Christ in World Christianity, M. Thomas Thangaraj, D.W. and Ruth Brooks Associate Professor of World Christianity. April 23-24. Druid Hills United Methodist Church, 1200 Ponce de Leon Ave.

Cost is $45 per course with registration at least a week in advance ($50 at the door); members of partner congregations and the Emory community pay only $35 ($40 at the door). Each course carries the option of one continuing education unit (CEU).
