Community Service Update

Many opportunities for service as Volunteer Emory kicks off another year

For the 1998-99 school year, Volunteer Emory has adopted the theme "Service for all Seasons." It's an especially appropriate theme this year, as we work continuously to organize and offer a greater variety and number of volunteer projects.

So that you may communicate better with Volunteer Emory and we with you, our office has established an email address at <volunteer@emory.edu>. We hope to hear from you often with suggestions, concerns, questions and ideas.

As for upcoming events, mark your calendar for the following. All are sponsored by Volunteer Emory unless otherwise noted.

  • Fall Volunteer Fair, Sept. 14- 17, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Coca Cola Commons. Representatives from 20 different agencies will be on hand each day to answer questions and provide information.
  • Sports Camp, Sept. 19, 11 a.m.2 p.m. on McDonough Field. Join children from the Boys & Girls Clubs, local homeless shelters and elementary schools for a day of sports-related activities and fun.
  • Hunger Walk, Sept. 28, sponsored by the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
  • Hands On Atlanta Day, Oct. 3. Join in and help clean up the community.
  • Center for Puppetry Arts Festival, Oct. 10.
  • AIDS Awareness Week, Oct. 14-17. A week of education and service.
  • AIDS Walk, Oct. 18. An Emory team number has been established; when registering, be sure to give Team No. 1096.
  • Walk To Cure Diabetes, Oct. 24, sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

To register for any of the above activities or for additional information, call Volunteer Emory at 404-727-6268 or 404-727-6269, or send e-mail to <volunteer@emory.edu> or through LearnLink.

Lisa Simpson is director of Volunteer Emory.
