Committee reports dominated a large part of the April 5 Presidents Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) meeting. Molly OBrien and Vicki Powers of faculty concerns reported on a
recent meeting with a representative from the Office of Institutional
Planning and Research, regarding a proposed study of female faculty and
tenure records. OBrien said the necessary data for this study can
be generated. "We feel like were getting somewhere," she
said. Karen Fain of staff concerns said its members are pulling together year-end
reports, which should be ready by Mays PCSW meeting. Members of the student concerns group reported that 550 cellular phones
were collected during its recent drive for phones to be donated to victims
of domestic abuse. About half of the phones have been sent to the national
organizers, PCSW chair Deb Floyd added. The committee is examining mentoring efforts between students and faculty.
More effective efforts to pair freshmen with faculty members for their
four years at Emory are being discussed, as are graduate student/faculty
mentorships. Another issue presented by student concerns was a letter advocating same-sex
graduate student housing requests. The letterwhich will be sent
to housing officials and administratorswill ask for a broader expansion
of same-sex housing opportunities. Currently such options are limited,
commission members said. Same-sex housing is sought by students for religious
and cultural reasons, while other members just want to have a choice in
their housing choices, the letter explains. Committee members asked for PCSW to sign the letter, and a motion to
do so was approved. In other business, the commission said the winners of its annual writing
contest have been chosen and will be announced publicly at the PCSW 25th
Anniversary Event on April 26. New PCSW members for 200102 will
be introduced at the years final PCSW meeting on Thursday, May 3,
which will take place in 400 Administration at 3:30 p.m. If you have a question or concern for PCSW, contact chair Deb Floyd at dfloyd@law.emory.edu. |
