LGBT

By Eric Rangus erangus@emory.edu

The President’s Commission on LGBT held its latest meeting April 18 in the Office of LGBT Life.

The primary issue on the agenda was membership. The commission voted on nominees to fill two staff, three student, one alumni, one administration and five at-large positions. One faculty position remains open, and some current members were shifted among categories if they qualified for more than one. Additional spots may open up, as not all current members had confirmed their interest in renewing.

Officer elections will be held at the next meeting. All positions will need to be filled at that time.

Applicants who were not selected for commission membership will be encouraged to reapply next year. The idea of inviting nonmembers to participate in subcommittee activities (similar to the setup of the President’s Commission on the Status of Women) was discussed.

The commission is working to implement a Safe Space program at Oxford to match the one on the Atlanta campus. Safe Space participants receive a pink logo that identifies them as allies of LGBT persons. The Oxford program would be identical to Atlanta’s except the Safe Space stickers would be yellow.

The next commission meeting will be held from 4–6 p.m., May 1, in 400 Administration.
