PCSM maps out year, changes meeting dates

By Stephanie Sonnenfeld ssonnen@emory.edu

Members of the President’s Commission on the Status of Minorities (PCSM) met for the first time this school year on Monday, Sept. 24, in the Administration Building.

The first item of business was changing the group’s monthly meeting dates from the fourth Monday of each month to alternating between the fourth Monday and the fourth Tuesday of every month. PCSM will meet the following dates for 2001–02: Tuesday, Oct. 23; Monday, Nov. 26; Tuesday, Jan. 29; Monday, Feb. 25; Tuesday, March 26; Monday, April 22. Members opted for varying meeting dates in hopes of bolstering meeting attendance.

Seiton reminded the group that nominations for a chair-elect will be accepted at the October meeting, and elections will be in November. Seiton also asked for volunteers for PCSM liasions to the President’s Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW), The President’s Commission on Lesbian/Gay/ Bisexual/Transgender Concerns(LGBT), University Senate and Employee Council. Vera Rorie, assistant dean of Campus Life and director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and college junior Christopher Richardson volunteered for the University Senate positions. Other positions are still remain open.

Seiton said the PCSM website needs to be redesigned, and college junior Matthew Jackson agreed to assist Rorie on this project. Seiton said volunteers are needed to work on on the PCSM’s "Strategic Diversity Plan" proposal. This study was discussed with President Bill Chace at the March meeting.

The plan is to identify ways Emory can best address and adopt diversity into its day-to-day life.

PCSM will meet again on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in 400 Administration.

If you have a question or concern for PCSM, e-mail Seiton at bseiton@medadm.emory.edu.
