Text compiled by Matthew Harrison and Eric Rangus.

Keith Anthony
Program Administrative Assistant, Center for Humanistic Inquiry

In describing Anthony, Martine Watson Brownley, Goodrich C. White Professor of English and director of the Center for Humanistic Inquiry, wrote: "convincing [Keith] to take a job with me was the best professional decision I have made since I arrived at Emory in 1975." Anthony is CHI’s lone staff member. By himself, he drafted the center’s five-year plan, and Brownley wrote that his work is notable for its "meticulous organization" backed by careful and creative thinking.

Anne Bavier
Assistant Dean for Development, Alumni and External Relations, School of Nursing

"[Bavier] has served with great distinction in a position that is uniquely complex, played multiple roles and consistently kept the best interests of the University, the Woodruff Health Sciences Center and the School of Nursing in the forefront of her concerns," wrote Marla Salmon, dean of the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. Bavier spearheaded the dedication ceremony of the school’s new building and provided lead support for the Lillian Carter Center for International Nursing until an administrative director could be hired.

Paula Bokros
Administrative Assistant, Center for Injury Control, Rollins School of Public Health

"On any given day, [Bokros] may have to deal with a TV news crew, two federal officials, a former patient, a faculty candidate and spouse, several medical students and/or residents-in-training … She treats them all with courtesy, humor and respect," wrote Arthur Kellerman, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Katherine Heilpern, vice chair for academic affairs in emergency medicine, wrote of Bokros, "Her commitment to the betterment of the Emory community is a chord that runs deep. The University is a better place because of people like Paula Bokros."

Linda Calloway
Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Women’s Studies

"Linda’s knowledge of undergraduate rules and regulations and the workings of the college and the institute have been a lifesaver to all of us during [a time of instability for the Women’s Study Department]," wrote Lee Ann Lloyd, women’s studies program development specialist. While working, Calloway found time to earn a B.A. in African American studies at Emory in 1999. Beth Reingold, associate professor of women’s studies, wrote of Calloway: "She is one of the most considerate people I know, always quick to acknowledge with warmth and sincerity our personal and professional milestones."

William Chatfield
Project Manager, Facilities Management

An Emory employee since February 1999, "Bill makes everyone he works with feel like they are part of a team, including people within Facilities Management, everyone he deals with throughout the University and others outside the Emory community," wrote John Fields, director of project management and construction. Chatfield consistently worked nights and weekends overseeing the construction of one of the University’s newest buildings. He also serves as a graduation marshal and is chair of the FM employee appreciation committee.

Lelia Crawford
Director of International Student and Scholar Programs

Establishing the office for international students, African American students and students with disabilities was Crawford’s first duty when she came to Emory 22 years ago. "She created programs such as international coffee hours and educated the Emory community to the needs of students of color and differently abled students, in addition to helping develop the Office of Multicultural Programs," wrote John Ford, senior vice president and dean for Campus Life. "Crawford possesses outstanding personal qualities and has contributed to Emory with unselfish dedication," he continued.

Mary Dial
Business Analyst, Human Resources

A benefits and accounting specialist who has worked in the Human Resources department since 1993, Dial has made quite an impression on her fellow colleagues. "To say that she is smart is really an understatement," nine of her coworkers wrote in a group nomination. "She is amazing at ‘thinking outside of the box’ and has become a PeopleSoft aficionado in her own right. The energy, attitude and dedication she brings to her job is both commendable and inspirational," they continued. Alice Miller, vice president for Human Resources, stated simply, "Mary is a natural champion for Emory and her community."

Elizabeth Hornor
Director of Educational Programs, Carlos Museum

"Elizabeth has been with the Carlos Museum for 12 years and during that time has not only become an invaluable member of the staff, but also has served the wider Emory community through her collaborative programming initiatives in performing arts, health sciences and the humanities," wrote Catherine Howett Smith, interim director of the Carlos Museum. Hornor has launched a summer camp and spearheaded Saturday workshops and after-school programs for children, as well as family festivals, children’s concerts, and much more. "I cannot think of another person who has done more to contribute to the spirit of community and the quality of life at Emory," Smith wrote.

Zinnia Johnston
Office Manager, Department of Spanish and Portuguese

"Given her interpersonal skills and finely honed sense of diplomacy [Johnston] has effectively become one of Emory University’s best ambassadors, not only facilitating communications with other Emory programs and departments and with the administration, but also representing us to visiting faculty and guest lecturers," wrote Hazel Gold, associate professor and chair of the Spanish and Portuguese Department. Gold listed Johnston’s many responsibilities: travel coordinator, maintenance troubleshooter, financial officer, support staff and work study supervisor, problem solver, ombudsman, translator and party planner.

Loette King
Manager, Accounts Payable

King came to accounts payable two years ago with "new, fresh ideas and immediately began establishing a professional, yet caring relationship with her employees and with all departments on campus," wrote Katherine Grant, accounts payable travel coordinator. King’s positive attitude is one of her strongest attributes. "She always lets her employees know that she appreciates their hard work and efforts," Grant continued. "When she is commended for ‘a job well done,’ she immediately shares the recognition with her employees and gives credit to the department as a whole."

Marvlyn Kirk
Assistant Director of College Relations, Oxford College

Kirk primarily is responsible for disseminating Oxford’s public and community relations information, and she manages the cultivation and stewardship of Oxford’s corporate and foundation community partners. "She is loyal, reliable, conscientious, honest and diligent," wrote Oxford’s director of development, Bruce Burney, of Kirk, who has been at Emory 21 years. "In short, Marvlyn demonstrates, on a daily basis, all of [the] qualities that characterize an outstanding employee."

Jackie Langham
Acting Customer Service Supervisor, Facilities Management

In her previous position as FM program administrative assistant and special events coordinator "[Langham’s] deliberate and excellent coordinating of events touched virtually every department," wrote Tommy Cutts, FM staging supervisor. "While at staging Emory relied on Jackie to coordinate and schedule over 4,000 work orders, handle literally 10,000 phone calls and guide hundreds of special events a year. Jackie is one of the brightest stars in Emory’s galaxy. She is much beloved at Facilities Management because she pays attention to her job and, more importantly, the people that are involved."

Anne Otwell
Human Resources Assistant, Emory Well House

"Anne’s gracious manner and professional knowledge have greeted customers, explained the program, screened phone calls, and always, represented Emory with professionalism, courtesy and respect," wrote 10 members of the Well House staff. "At a time when technology and prevailing practice compel us to communicate more and more through e-mail and voice mail, it is easy to forget the power that resides in and the skill that is required for interacting person to person. One of her distinguishing qualities is her ability to engage each person individually so that that person always feels recognized and valued."
