Town hall searches for true community: Emory College senior Joel Hall asks a question during the Nov. 24 town hall meeting in Glenn Auditorium with President Jim Wagner. The event was organized in light of recent acts of racial insensitivity on campus and was co-sponsored by the president’s office and the Concerned Students Coalition, a group formed in response to those same incidents. More than 400 people attended. “There is an abundance on raw material [for community] on this campus,” Wagner said. “Our collective task is to build.”Photo by Kay Hinton.

Christopher Dickey, Paris bureau chief and Middle East regional editor for Newsweek, was at Emory on Thursday, Nov. 22, to discuss his experiences covering wars, most recently the war in Iraq. Dickey spoke on a wide range of topics, but one of the most resonant was his take on America’s sense of detachment from war in general and the perception of it by the rest of the world. “In the 1980s and 1990s, I tried to break through this American sense of detachment. In article after article I tried to give some sense of the anger that was building against the United States by the rest of the world,” said Dickey, who also drew parallels to his perceptions of war to his father’s—the poet and author James Dickey—who was a World War II fighter pilot.
