Christopher
Dickey, Paris bureau chief and Middle East regional editor for Newsweek,
was at Emory on Thursday, Nov. 22, to discuss his experiences covering
wars, most recently the war in Iraq. Dickey spoke on a wide range of topics,
but one of the most resonant was his take on America’s sense of
detachment from war in general and the perception of it by the rest of
the world. “In the 1980s and 1990s, I tried to break through this
American sense of detachment. In article after article I tried to give
some sense of the anger that was building against the United States by
the rest of the world,” said Dickey, who also drew parallels to
his perceptions of war to his father’s—the poet and author
James Dickey—who was a World War II fighter pilot.
