Wilco drummer, All-Stars to open semester with a bang and special price with drumstick

Bang on a Can All-Stars featuring Wilco's Glenn Kotche

The Candler Series presents the Bang on a Can All-Stars’ energetic and unique mix of classical, experimental jazz and rock in a concert with special guest Glenn Kotche, the drummer/percussionist from the band Wilco, on Friday, Jan. 22, 8 p.m., in the Schwartz Center.

The program features David Lang’s “Sunray,” Michael Gordon’s “For Madeline,” Evan Ziporyn’s “Music from Shadowbang,” Steve Reich’s “Music for Pieces of Wood” arranged by David Cossin for drums and several of Kotche’s original compositions, “Mobile,” “Snap” and “Clapping Music Variations” based on a work by Reich.

The New York Times calls Bang on a Can, "A fiercely aggressive group, combining the power and punch of a rock band with the precision and clarity of a chamber ensemble."

As part of Emory’s Coca-Cola Artist-in-Residence Program several members of the All-Stars will lead a lecture and listening session on Thursday, Jan. 21 from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. and Kotche will give an open percussion demo/discussion with the All-Stars’ David Cossin on Jan. 22 from 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Both events are free and open for public observation.

Emory faculty and staff can purchase tickets for $37 (full price $50) from the Arts at Emory box office. Emory student tickets are $20, or free with an Arts Passport membership. Discounts are not available online.

Want to invite your non-Emory friends to the performance? Tell them to bring a drumstick in honor of Kotche to the box office before Jan. 22 to receive $37 tickets (only valid for in-person purchases). For box office hours and information visit www.arts.emory.edu or call 404-727-5050.
