The Department of Film Studies and Emory Cinematheque of Emory College continue their series of international film classics in the pictures’ original 35mm format on Wednesday nights.  All screenings, at 7:30 p.m. in White Hall 205, are free and open to the community. 

The Cinematheque series
Sept. 29: “Steamboat Bill, Jr.,” Buster Keaton’s 1928 silent comedy, introduced by Emory College Dean Robin Forman, with live piano accompaniment by the world renowned Donald Sosin.

Oct. 13: “All Quiet on the Western Front,” Lewis Milestone’s 1930 anti-War classic.

Oct. 20: Frank Capra’s “You Can’t Take it With You,” The Best Picture Oscar winner for 1938.

Oct. 27: An early-1930s “surrealist” double feature of Jean Vigo’s “Zéro de Conduite” and Luis Buñuel & Salvador Dali’s “L’Âge d’Or.”

Nov. 3: “Love Affair,” Leo McCarey’s 1939 sentimental comedy classic.

Nov. 10: “To Be Or Not To Be,” Ernst Lubitsch’s 1942 satirical assault on Nazism.

Nov. 17: “Ikiru,” Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 study of the transformation and redemption of an undistinguished bureaucrat.

Dec. 1: “Force of Evil” CPA member Abraham Polonsky’s 1948 noir classic and HUAC target.

All screenings will be introduced by David B. Pratt of the Department of Film Studies, or other members of the Emory community.

Plaza Theater series
The Department of Film Studies is also a co-sponsor of a series of off-campus films at the Plaza Theater (at the intersection of Ponce de Leon and Highland avenues) by director Elia Kazan. Running on three consecutive Mondays starting at 7:30 p.m., admission is free for Emory students and a shuttle to and from the theater will leave White Hall at 7:10 p.m.

Homecoming special
Also: On Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11:30 a.m. in White Hall 205, Emory Alum Mark Goffman ’90C will introduce and screen his 2010 documentary on ventriloquists, “Dumbstruck.”
