Alice Walker to give benefit reading

During her visit to Emory to participate in "The Creative Journey: Artists in Conversation with the Dalai Lama on Spirituality and Creativity" on Oct. 19, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker will deliver a benefit reading in support of the James Weldon Johnson Institute, the Alice Walker Literary Society and Charis Circle on Oct. 20.  

The reading, at 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta located at 1911 Cliff Valley Way in Atlanta, celebrates the publication of Walker’s new volume of poems, “Hard Times Require Furious Dancing.” Tickets are $25 and available at Charis Books, 1189 Euclid Avenue in Atlanta, or online.

The Alice Walker Literary Society is based at Emory’s James Weldon Johnson Institute, and the writer’s archives are housed in the African American Collection of Emory’s Manuscript, Archive and Rare Book Library.  

Charis Circle is an Atlanta-based nonprofit feminist organization.
