Campus Sustainability Day: Biking and more

In observance of Campus Sustainability Day on Wednesday, Oct. 20, Emory’s Office of Sustainability Initiatives,  Bike Emory and other environmentally focused groups are coming together with students and staff to celebrate past accomplishments and learn new and different ways to help the University reach its sustainable goals.

Campus sustainability day was created to raise awareness about and to reinforce sustainability efforts across college campuses throughout the country.

There are many ways to participate:

• Bike to Campus Day: Bike Emory is encouraging everyone who lives, learns or works in the area to bike to campus to show support for cycling as a commuting option. Riders will meet in front of Bicycle South (2098 N. Decatur Rd.) at 8 a.m. where a free breakfast will be provided. Prizes will be awarded to the cyclist with the longest commute and a Bicycle South gift certificate will be raffled.

• Sustainability-themed Wonderful Wednesday: Join the Emory Environmental Alliance, Generation Response, Greeks Go Green and more on Asbury Circle from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

• Enjoy short discussions on sustainability from 12-2 p.m. at Asbury Circle, including: “What is sustainability?”; “Sustainability technologies”; and “Business and sustainability.”

• Find out what issues matter to students and staff at the “Sustainability at Emory” workshop, from 5-6 p.m. at the Dobbs University Center.

• See the movie, “The Day After Peace” about an individual’s attempt to create an annual global day of peace. The movie starts at 6 p.m. in Harland Cinema.

• Lights out throughout campus: Emory will recognize five minutes of darkness to recognize the importance of sustainability. Power down at 8 p.m.

• Participate in the academic discussion on “When the Lights Go Out” by candlelight on the Quad to confer about what could happen when fossil fuels begin to vanish.  Meet in front of Woodruff Library at 7:55 p.m.

• Join in a game of “Sardines” in residence halls and around campus. Search Facebook for “Emory Campus Sustainability Day” to find out where.

• Enjoy a night walk around Emory’s campus to “see” the environment using natural light. The walk begins at 9 p.m. and walkers should meet in front of Woodruff Library.
