Lecture honors cardinal's beatification

John Henry Newman

A "Newman for all Seasons," a lecture in honor of the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, is set for Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Newman was beatified by the Catholic Church in September, the third of four steps in the canonization process.

Free and open to the public, the lecture will be given by Patrick Allitt, Cahoon Family Professor of American History, in the Center for Ethics Room 102.

The lecture is being presented by the Aquinas Center of Theology.

Phillip M. Thompson, executive director of the Aquinas Center, says that the writings of Newman continue to be influential. In addition to essays, poems, theological treatises and apologetics, the 19th century British priest wrote “The Idea of a University,” described as “a brilliant defense of the value of a liberal arts education.”
