Bioethics dialogue advances at Emory

University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann chairs the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. President Jim Wagner serves as vice chair.

Emory hosted the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues on Nov. 16-17. It was the commission’s final meeting before issuing recommendations to President Barack Obama on synthetic biology – the engineering of biological functions and systems not found in nature.

President Jim Wagner serves as vice chair of the Commission, which is headed by University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann.

"Ethical engagement with human issues arising at the frontiers of science is one of Emory’s core commitments as an academic community," says Wagner.

Wagner and Gutmann led a conversation on the commission’s work at a Nov. 17 event, “Universities on the Leading Edge: Advancing Dialogue on Bioethics.”
