February concerts are music to warm the cold


Taipei Chinese Orchestra performs Sunday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m.


Emory Annual Jazz Fest features Nicholas Payton


Nicola Benedetti performs Friday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m.

The ice has melted and the music program at Emory is heating up with 13 concerts to choose from this February.

The month kicks off with the internationally renowned St. Olaf Band, Saturday, Feb, 5 at 8 p.m. Under the direction of Timothy Mahr since 1994, the St. Olaf Band has performed around the world, with its New York City debut in 2003 at Lincoln Center.

Timothy Albrecht returns Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m. to present "The Bach Bowl" with guests Tamara Albrecht, William Ransom and Keiko Ransom. The program features the "Concerto for Three Keyboards in D Minor," performed on two harpsichords, piano and organ.

Directed by Tong Soon Lee, the Emory Gamelan Ensemble presents "Sounds of Sunda," featuring the music of West Java, Indonesia, including instrumental and vocal music, narrative singing, folk and popular songs. The Gamelan Ensemble, part of the music department's world music program, performs Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Studio.

Two additional Emory groups perform this month: The Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m., and the Emory Wind Ensemble, Saturday, Feb. 26 at 8 p.m.

Taipei Chinese Orchestra with Wu Man, pipa, perform the first Flora Glenn Candler Concert of the semester.  Set for Sunday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m., this remarkable ensemble showcases Wu Man, the first person ever to receive a master's degree in pipa, the plucked instrument with origins in China's Qin and Han Dynasties (221 BCE).  Tickets: $42; discount category members $36; Emory students $10. A pre-concert lecture at 3 p.m. introduces the fascinating world of Chinese music.

Quartet-in-residence Vega String Quartet gives a concert as part of the Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta Noontime Series, Friday, Feb. 18 at noon in the Carlos Museum.

The Emory Annual Jazz Fest is set for Friday, Feb. 18 and Saturday, Feb. 19.  Nicholas Payton, trumpet, begins the two-night festival with a concert at 8 p.m. Since 1994 when he made his recording debut with "From This Moment," Payton has been lauded as a significant, top-tier voice in jazz. He performs at Emory with the Gary Motley Trio. Tickets: $15; discount category members $10; Emory students free. Saturday night is Big Band Night at 8 p.m. with a free concert directed by Gary Motley.

The Emory University Organist Recital Series continues with Randall Harlow, Sunday, Feb. 20 at 4 p.m.  Finishing his doctorate at Eastman School of Music, Harlow performs in Greenland, Sweden and America.

The UK's innovative and award-winning classical music sensation Nicola Benedetti, violin, brings her exquisite sounds to Emory as part of the Candler Concert Series, Friday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. Tickets: $38; discount category members $32; Emory students $10.

The Atlanta Sacred Chorale continues their season with "Masterworks: Bach – Mass in B Minor," Sunday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. This community chorus brings together professional musicians and gifted amateurs in an ensemble known for artistry and transcendent sound. Tickets: $30 adult; senior/student $20; Emory students $5.
