'Civil Discourse' panel takes on gossip, bullying
Matt Ivester, founder of JuicyCampus.com, the now-defunct blog for gossip on campuses across the country, will be a panelist in a civil discourse dialogue Tuesday, April 5, at 5:30 p.m. at Tull Auditorium in the law school.
Gossip and bullying — recent incidents and ways to deal with them — will be the topic of the dialogue.
"Civil Discourse: Gossip, Bullying and the Digital Age" will also feature Omar Wasow, co-Founder of BlackPlanet.com and Daniel Solove, law professor at George Washington University.
On the panel from Emory will be Shifali Baliga, president of the College Council; Paula Gomes, director of the Faculty Staff Assistance Program; and Mark McLeod, director of counseling services.
The panel will cover questions of speech and responsibility, recent events of bullying and gossip, the impact of new technology on society, and ways of mediating and managing gossip and bullying.
"We all are vulnerable to the opinions of others and our sense of vulnerability may be heightened given the proliferation of technology, old attitudes and modern social networks," says Ozzie Harris, senior vice provost for community and diversity.
"We will examine what is occurring in our society and imagine what we might do, or not do, to address these pressures," Harris says.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Office of Community and Diversity and the College Council.
