Emory Wind Ensemble to present 'Innovation: Festival of New Music'

The Emory Wind Ensemble, with conductor Scott A. Stewart, presents "Innovation: A Festival of New Music."

The Emory Wind Ensemble, with conductor Scott A. Stewart, presents "Innovation: A Festival of New Music" on Wednesday, April 20 at 8 p.m. in the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts.

The Emory Concert Choir, under the direction of Eric Nelson, joins the Emory Wind Ensemble along with Carl David Hall, piccolo, and guest composer Bruce Broughton. Lois Reitzes, host of "Second Cup Concert" on 90.1 WABE, will serve as master of ceremonies.

"Innovation" features the music of three contemporary composers. Program highlights include:

• "In the World of Spirits," a world premiere by Bruce Broughton, commissioned by and dedicated to Stewart and the Emory University Wind Ensemble;

• The world premiere of "Mysterium" by Jennifer Higdon, co-commissioned by Emory University and the University of South Carolina; and

• A wind and choral version of Christopher Theofanidis's "The Here and Now."

Broughton, who was an Emory Coca-Cola Artist-in-Residence in 2007, returns to campus for a residency with the Emory students and faculty and will be present for the concert.

"'Innovation' is a concert of exciting new music which brings together tradition and innovation in compositions for wind ensemble," says Stewart, Emory Wind Ensemble director. "Emory has an established national reputation as a leader in the commissioning of new works for the wind band/ensemble medium, and this concert is the birth of two new musical works by eminent creative artists, as well as an evening of collaboration with singers and faculty members."

The festival is free and open to the public. For details, visit arts.emory.edu.
