This year's Goodrich C. White Lecture will be presented by author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin on Tuesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. at Glenn Memorial Auditorium.

Her lecture, "Lessons of History" as drawn from the American presidents, is free and open to the public.

Goodwin has reported on politics and baseball for more than two decades, and appears regularly on network television programs. In 1995, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her book "No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The American Home Front During World War II."

"As Emory prepared to observe a milestone year in its own history, at the same time that our nation recalled the start of the Civil War 150 years ago, it seemed fitting to invite an eminent American historian to help us reflect on the uses of history. We are fortunate that Doris Kearns Goodwin is able to bring her gifts of insight, clarity and brilliant storytelling to our campus," says Gary Hauk, vice president and deputy to the president.

"What with the firing on Fort Sumter, the assassinations of Lincoln and King, the San Francisco earthquake, America's entry into World War I, the surrender at Bataan, the Bay of Pigs, the Oklahoma City bombing—April may be the cruelest month in American history. But it's a wonderful time for historians at Emory," adds Hauk, who chairs the Goodrich C. White Lectureship committee.

Endowed by the DVS Senior Society, and cosponsored by the President's Office, the White Lecture was established in memory of Emory's 14th president, a 1908 graduate of Emory College and later dean of the College and vice president of the University. White served as president from 1942 until retiring in 1957.
