Bring the family or a picnic to a free outdoor concert series.

The Emory Summer Concert Band, under the direction of Scott A. Stewart, director of wind studies, presents the annual "Twilight Concerts" on Thursday, July 7 and Thursday, July 14, at 8 p.m. in the Jenkins Courtyard of the Goizueta Business School. Admission and parking are free.

Each one-hour concert program features light wind band classics, classical transcriptions, marches, folk songs and musical theater.

Stewart says "The outdoor band concerts honor the heritage of the American concert band, which emanates from outdoor, portable, entertaining music-making. These early concerts not only featured music of the day—marches, polkas, waltzes, vaudeville, foxtrots—but also introduced non-urban audiences to European classics."

The Emory Summer Concert Band consists of Emory students, alumni and community members.

"This is a 100 percent-volunteer activity by folks who love playing," notes Stewart, adding that the concerts are held in collaboration with the Emory Pre-College Program.

"The Emory Summer Band is one of the highlights of my summer for a variety of reasons," says Emory Artist Affiliate Kay Fairchild. "As a teacher, I look forward to interacting with my students. As a performer, it allows me to play with musicians of all backgrounds.  As the brass personnel manager, Emory Summer Band allows me the opportunity to reconnect with the large musical family in Atlanta. And last but not least, the outside performance venue gives my grandchildren a chance to hear me play."
