Multi-faceted event 'Weaving New Beginnings' notes diversity, resources
"Weaving New Beginnings" on Wednesday, Sept. 21 will celebrate the diversity of the Emory community and available resources with a special speaker and dance performances. The reception, sponsored by the Center for Women at Emory, the Office of Multicultural Programs and Services and Goizueta Business School, is at 4 p.m. at the Goizueta Business School, W525.
Though geared toward women, everyone — staff, faculty, students and alumni of all genders — is invited, says Amy Lee, program coordinator at the Center for Women.
Sheryl Heron, dean of medical education and student affairs at the School of Medicine, will be the guest speaker. Heron is also associate director in the Department of Emergency Medicine; an associate director for the Center for Injury Control; assistant and associate residency program director for Emergency Medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital.
The event is the brainchild of Center for Women Associate Director Sasha Smith. Smith says she sees a lot of people who come to the Center with one of two challenges: They feel isolated and alone, or they are looking for a specific resource to solve a problem or issue. Her goal for this event is to help.
The purpose, Smith says, is to bring people together "to have conversations, build community and let them realize they are not alone."
"The other component is to make them aware of the resources available to them," she notes.
A reception will be held for an opportunity to learn about available campus resources and to network. Multicultural student dance groups Zuri, an African-styled dance group, and Persuasion, an all-female hip-hop group, will perform.
