Contest ignites energy savings

From Oct. 1 to Oct. 31, Emory's building occupants will compete to reduce energy use on campus.

The annual energy reduction competition encourages faculty, staff and students to modify their daily behaviors to help the University reach its sustainability goals by turning off lights, unplugging phone chargers and other simple actions.

The contest is sponsored by the Office of Sustainability Initiatives and provides a cash incentive for buildings in the categories of research, residential and classroom/administration buildings to receive $1,000 each toward a sustainability-related prize.

Last year's competition resulted in 414,000kwh saved – a reduction of 317 tons of CO2 emissions.

The yearly challenge is one way Emory encourages its campus to strive to reach its goals including reducing energy use by 25 percent per square foot by 2015.
