Life of the Mind Lecture looks at fragile X gene

"Fragile X Syndrome: Journey from Gene to Bench to Bedside" is the first Life of the Mind Lecture for this year.

It will be Thursday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. in the Jones Room of the Woodruff Library.

Stephen T. Warren will be in conversation with Gary Bassell on the topic.  Warren is William Patterson Timmie Professor of Human Genetics and Charles Howard Candler Chair in Human Genetics Professor of Pediatrics and Biochemistry. Bassell is professor of cell biology and neurology in the School of Medicine.

Warren led the international team of scientists who in 1991 discovered the gene responsible for fragile X syndrome, the leading cause of inherited mental retardation. The breakthrough has led to the development of diagnostic tests for the syndrome and its carriers as well as the identification and study of possible therapies

Bassell calls Warren one of Emory's "game changers", whose pioneering and interdisciplinary research over the past two decades has paved the way from gene discovery to clinical treatment of an inherited neurological disease.

"During this discussion, Dr. Warren will be asked to comment on his career path, risks taken, lessons learned, advice for junior investigators, perspectives on the future of biomedical and translational research, and the role of science at Emory in transforming the future the modern medicine," Bassell says.

The next Life of the Mind Lecture is planned for Feb. 1, 2012, featuring Ani Satz in discussion with Martha Fineman discussing animal rights.  Satz is an associate professor in the School of Law, the Rollins School of Public Health and the Center for Ethics. Fineman is Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Law.

The series is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Faculty Council to celebrate Emory's outstanding faculty and the dynamic intellectual community of the University.
