1920s 'Lost Generation' in Paris is talk topic Nov. 16
"Shadows of the Sun: The Crosbys, the Black Sun Press, and the Lost Generation" on exhibit in the Schatten Gallery of the Woodruff Library will be the subject of a gallery talk by curator Kevin Young on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m.
Young will talk about Black Sun owners Henry and Caresse Crosby, their dedication to their small boutique press, and their friendships with writers Ernest Hemingway, D.H. Lawrence, James Joyce, Hart Crane, all encompassed in the exhibition, while creating a picture of life in 1920s Paris.
Young, who is also curator of both the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library and literary collections at MARBL (Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library), will discuss modernism and the generation of writers, artists, jazz musicians and exiles in Paris after the First World War.
This Lost Generation of expatriate American writers and artists led avant-garde, adventurous lives of experimentation and controversy in the 1920s.
The materials in the exhibition, running through March 16, are drawn from a nearly-complete collection in the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library at MARBL and include books by small Paris publishers other than the Black Sun Press.
The Schatten Gallery is on the library's third floor.
