Venezuelan choral group to perform

Schola Cantorum de Venezuela performs at Emory's Schwartz Center for Performing Arts on Friday, Nov. 11 at 8 p.m. The internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble will present Latin American works in the program "Aqua and Fiesta."
"Aqua and Fiesta" features works set to the text of writers such as Pablo Neruda, Maria Fernanda Palacios and Octavio Paz. The program also includes traditional folk songs, a cappella pieces, holiday songs and dance music from different regions of South America.
Atlanta audiences came to know the choral group in 2006, when they performed Osvaldo Golijov's "La Pasión según San Marcos" at the Schwartz Center under the direction of Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Robert Spano. In addition to Spano, Schola Cantorum de Venezuela has performed with some of the world's most prominent conductors, including Roberto Abbado, Erik Nielsen, Helmuth Rilling and Steven Sloane.
Schola Cantorum de Venezuela has performed in more than 18 different countries and in many notable festivals and competitions. They have recorded more than 25 albums and in recent years premiered John Adam's opera, "A Flowering Tree," at the New Crown Hope Festival in Vienna. Founded in 1967, Schola Cantorum de Venezuela is currently directed by Maria Guinand and Ana María Raga.
