The Emory University Police Department, a division of Emory Community Services, provides a variety of services to the Emory community, but our primary mission remains that of making the campus a safe place in which to live, study and work. We learned long ago that we cannot accomplish our goal without the cooperation and assistance of other members of the community. This is one way of helping you get to know us, just as we hope we will get to know you.

-- Craig T. Watson, Chief of Police

Our Mission

Emory Community Services is an exemplary organization that has a positive impact on the quality of life at Emory.

We provide efficient, equitable, professional services that exceed the community's parking, public safety, and commute options expectations.

Emory Police Department - A Short Overview

The Emory community has both conventional and special needs to be met in providing a safe and secure environment in which to learn, work, and live. In 1978, Emory University's Department of Public Safety was upgraded from a security department to a police agency. In 1990, reflecting the changing needs and functions, the name of the Department of Public Safety was changed to the Emory University Police Department. In 1992, we became our own NCIC/GCIC reporting agency, which allows our department regular access to state and national criminal and traffic records. In 1995, we joined with the Parking Office to form the Community Services Division of Emory University which includes police, parking and alternative transportation services.

The Emory University Police Department is located at 1784 North Decatur Road, on the ground floor of the North Decatur Building. Emergency police, medical, fire and other services are available 24-hours a day by simply picking up any phone and dialing 911 or 727-6111. Or by using any of the the Blue-Light phones located throughout the university campus. See our Blue-Light Phone Map for the exact locations.

The Emory University Police Department provides complete law enforcement services to the Emory Community which includes the Emory University Hospital, Yerkes Primate Center, and extensive medical research and treatment centers. In addition to the approximately 12,000 students and 14,000 employees, there are 5,000 to 15,000 visitors and guests daily at Emory University.

EPD is more than an organization which simply reacts to problems. We takes steps proactively to identify and anticipate problem areas of safety and security. From ways to keep your computers safer to providing security escorts, EPD strives to keep the community members safe and secure.

The Emory University Police Department has jurisdiction both on and off Emory property. EPD works in conjunction with the Dekalb County Police Department, as well as other law enforcement agencies, to provide law enforcement services to the greater Emory community.

UNIFORM PATROL DIVISION

The Uniform Patrol Division is the most visible of the police department and operates the marked patrol cars 24-hours a day. The division responds to the Emory campus, parking decks, residence halls, academic, administrative and research buildings. They investigate accidents, responds to reports of crime, and engages in preventative patrol. The unit is the first to respond to your calls for assistance.

The division has more than 20 police officers who patrol more than 78,000 miles each year and answer approximately 15,000 calls. These officers, all certified by the State of Georgia as peace officers, have full authority to enforce all federal, state and county laws; make arrests; issue traffic citations; and enforce Emory University regulations.

In addition to the police officers, the division also has four Community Services Officers. These security officers provide night time building security, motorist assistance services and security escorts throughout the campus.

The Uniform Division also operates the Bike Patrol, a unit of uniformed police officers who patrol the Emory community on marked mountain bikes. These officers are more accessible and often have greater mobility than officers in cars, and work closely with the Community Relations Team to assist the Emory Community.

The Training Unit is committed to furthering the training and continuing education of department personnel. EPD's training greatly exceeds Georgia standards. The Emory University Police Department provides instructors to many of the regional police academies and hosts many training sessions and seminars that are attended by officers from Federal, state, municipal, and private agencies from all over the United States. Topics range from advanced firearms training to multicultural sensitivity training.

SPECIAL SERVICES DIVISION

9112.gif (20765 bytes)The Communications Unit provides 24-hour-a-day 9-1-1 emergency assistance phone and radio dispatch service. When police, fire, or emergency medical assistance is needed, simply call 9- 1-1 or 727-6111 and the correct emergency response will be coordinated. Police, fire, and medical units will be dispatched to your location as needed. They also monitor the Blue Light phones and the fire and intrusion alarms through-out campus. You may also reach them at 727-8005 for non-emergency assistance.

The Detective Unit is responsible for investigation and court presentation of criminal cases for crimes occurring on campus. Also, as a community service to the students, faculty, staff and other people affiliated with Emory University, the Detective Unit offers the service of fingerprinting for professional and other needs. Please contact the Detective Unit at 727-6115 for an appointment.

efrutest.jpg (10925 bytes)The First Responder Unit is a student-run emergency medical response unit administered and funded through the Police Department. The members of this Unit are certified First Responders or Emergency Medical Technicians. The Unit's vehicles carry basic life-support equipment and each vehicle is always staffed with a certified Emergency Medical Technician. The Unit operates 24-hours a day during the regular academic year, and works closely with the Dekalb County EMS Division. Illness, injury and emergency medical assistance are requested through the EPD 9-1-1 Center.

The Crime Prevention Unit and Community Relations Team provide the Emory community with information on how to reduce risk by keeping their work and learning environment safe and secure. The unit offer presentations on a wide range of topics, such as personal and property safety; drug and alcohol awareness; and sexual assault prevention. The Crime Prevention Unit also provides bicycle and personal property registration, which is a valuable resource and can enhance the chance of recovery of items, in the case of theft. The unit also administers the Student Patrol Program, which employs students to provide security escorts during the school year.

As part of the Crime Prevention Unit, the Community Relations Team -- a group of police and other civilian volunteers-- makes regular contact with students and employees, presenting information on personal safety, sexual assault, workplace violence, drugs and alcohol awareness, and other issues and services.
