In order to ease the tensions created by the Civil War, the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity was founded at the Virginia Military Institute in 1865 and has developed into the nation's premier leadership development fraternity. Emory's Alpha Theta chapter of Alpha Tau Omega was founded on the Oxford campus in 1881.
