Recruitment > FAQs

Here are some of the frequently asked questions our office has received. Have a question, but can't find the answer here? Email us!

Do I need references?
Does it cost a lot to join a fraternity or sorority?
Will being in a Greek-lettered organization affect my grades?
What questions should I ask sorority/fraternity members?
Are the rumors about sorority and fraternity life true?
Do the sororities or fraternities haze?

Recommendations tell a sorority or fraternity a little more about your personality, scholarship and activities from an alumna or collegiate member and introduce the potential new member to the chapter before formal recruitment week begins. Potential new members are NOT required to secure recommendations in order to receive bids. It is the responsibility of the chapter to obtain a recommendation if one is needed.

Sororities and fraternities membership is available to all, and though financial commitment is necessary, that commitment comes with many benefits. Furthermore, chapters provide scholarships, assistance, and payment plans; just ask.

The all-Greek GPA average is continually higher then the college GPA average. Sororities and fraternities have GPA requirements and provide incentives, programs, and assistance such as study hours and tutors to help members achieve scholastic success.

Why should I pledge? Why did you pledge? How long is the new member program? How will Greek life benefit me in the future? What campus and community organizations have you had the opportunity to participate in as a result of your membership? What opportunities are there for leadership and involvement within the chapter and Greek community?

Keep an open mind about each individual sorority and fraternity. Each chapter has its own individual and unique values, characteristics, and programs. You must decide where you feel most comfortable and at home, and with which chapter and its members you see yourself being friends, trusting, depending on, and supporting in the future.

Sororities and fraternities were founded on the principles of leadership, scholarship, philanthropy/service, and sisterhood or brotherhood. Chapters expect their members to strive towards these endeavors and goals of academic achievement, responsible citizenship, and self-respect and respect for others by providing strong leadership. Hazing in any form is not tolerated by the Greek community or the University. If you have any questions or concerns about hazing, or ever feel uncomfortable in a situation, please contact your recruitment counselor or stop by the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life and we will be happy to address your concerns.
