Message from the Dean
Welcome to the Graduate School at Emory.
Graduate education is the point from which the course of our global future is set. It ensures the conservation and preservation of existing knowledge. It prepares scholars who courageously forge inroads into new areas of study and create new knowledge. It is responsible for producing the public intellectuals who shape debate around the day’s issues and produce the policies upon which our nation governs itself and interacts with the world. It enables our country to participate successfully in an increasingly competitive global economy.
At Emory we are committed to creating the next generation of great professors and academic researchers. We are also committed to preparing our graduate students for a variety of professional pathways leading form master’s and doctoral study. We provide opportunities that teach our students how to translate theory into practice, and to think beyond the traditional boundaries or academic disciplines. Our graduates are prepared to creatively apply their knowledge and skills to develop fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to old and unsettled questions. We hold teaching and research in highest regard and also see other outcomes of graduate education.
This principle is nourished by the diverse intellectual community found at Emory, one that encourages interdisciplinary study solidly grounded in disciplinary training. Graduate programs of moderate size create a collegial academic setting that makes possible meaningful interactions within and across disciplines. The abundant resources available on campus are enriched by the long-established partnerships Emory has with many corporations, government agencies, non-profit organizations and universities in the Atlanta area. These relationships provide students and faculty with a wealth of opportunities to engage in collaborative research with scholars and professionals from around the world.
Graduate education at Emory means reaching beyond the boundaries of the university. It is about widening the scope of perspectives experience, and knowledge that students and faculty have access to, so they may stretch the reach of the academy. It is about using the knowledge uncovered through research, and the skills acquired through rigorous graduate study, to make a difference in the world. Graduate education at Emory is about setting the course for a brighter, more enlightened future for one’s self, one’s field of study, and society.
I am glad you have chosen Emory as the point from which you will set the course for your future.
With best regards,
Lisa A. Tedesco, PhD
