Registering for Courses
After consulting with your adviser, you should complete registration forms and submit them with the necessary signatures to your program office. Program staff will check all forms and enter your schedule on the Registrar’s system. You must pay your registration bill at the Student Financial Services office in the Boisfeuillet Jones Center by 4:00 p.m. on the day of registration. New students who do not complete registration by the deadline must pay a $50 late registration fee.

OPUS is the university’s online student information system. It allows you to access your schedule, grades, fee bills, and your financial aid information. You should become familiar with OPUS as soon as possible. The OPUS system may be accessed at www.OPUS.emory.edu. If you are a new student, you should update your address in OPUS before the start of classes. You are encouraged to check OPUS each semester to ensure accuracy in scheduling, registration, and billing. For assistance with OPUS issues, you can use the online help provided on the OPUS website or call the IT help desk at 404-727-7777.

Continuing Students

Unless instructed otherwise by your graduate program, all continuing degree-seeking students in the Graduate School can register via OPUS. To assist with the registration process, you will be provided with specific instructions by email prior to pre-registration. Please pay particular attention to program instructions regarding registration.

You must pay your bill at the Office of Student Financial Services in the Boisfeuillet Jones Center by 4:00 p.m. on the day of registration. Students who do not complete registration by the deadline will assess a $50.00 late registration fee.

Pre-registration for summer 2007 began February 9th. For the 2007-08 academic year, fall pre-registration began March 30 and spring pre-registration will begin November 2, 2007.

There are two steps to registration: signing up for courses and paying or arranging for payment of bills. Check with the program staff before pre-registration for program-specific requirements. The basic steps are outlined below.

Signing up for Courses

  1. Registration forms are located in the back of the Graduate School Course Atlas and can be downloaded as files in PDF format and printed from the graduate school website.
  2. Complete the registration forms, making sure to indicate the class number, OPUS course number, number of credit hours, and grading option for each course. You must also obtain signatures for permission only (section numbers ending in P) and overloaded (closed) courses. You should always consult instructors before registering to audit a course.
  3. Have your faculty adviser review course selections and sign your registration forms.
  4. Submit your registration forms to the program office for approval. Your program may require you to obtain faculty signatures on approved schedules prior to pre-registration.
  5. After complying with program procedures, you may pre-register on OPUS. The dates of pre-registration are published on the Registrar’s website.
  6. You are responsible for obtaining the required program approval for your schedule and for verifying that your registration is correct.

Special Standing Students

If you are a special standing student, you may not use OPUS to pre-register. The graduate school will enter your schedule in OPUS for you. Before registering for a course, you must obtain required signatures from course instructors and progams. Some programs require special standing students to obtain permission from the director of graduate studies as well. Once you have obtained all the necessary signatures, turn in the completed and approved registration form to the graduate school. Graduate school staff will then enter your schedule in OPUS.

Registration Status

Students in the Graduate School register in one of three forms of registration:

  1. Enrollment. All students taking courses must be in enrollment status. This includes all audit, directed study, and research courses as well as standard coursework for both degree-seeking and special standing students. Students in enrollment status may not register for RES 999GSAS.
  2. Residency. Students who wish to maintain student status or use university facilities during the summer should register in residency status in the 999GSAS course for 12 hours. Residency status is normally used only in the summer. The 999GSAS course may be used only in conjunction with the residency or tuition-paid form of study. It may not be used as a filler.
  3. Tuition-paid status. Students who have completed 48 hours in advanced standing are registered in tuition-paid status. They may register for 12 hours in RES 999GSAS, 12 hours in dissertation research, or register for courses.
