Graduate School Stipends and Tuition Scholarships

Types of Support
The Graduate School generally awards two types of support to students: tuition scholarships and stipends.  In addition, the Graduate School awards several special fellowships to outstanding first year students.  For more information about these special fellowships, please refer to the Special Fellowships page.

Tuition Scholarships
Tuition scholarships may be partial or full tuition.  These scholarships are awards for tuition credits only.  They are not cash and cannot be awarded as stipend dollars.

Students cannot be required to work for tuition scholarships unless this work is required of all students in the department as part of the degree requirements.

Stipends
Stipends are awarded for either nine or twelve months, depending on the program the student is enrolled in (see list below).

The special Graduate School fellowships (Arts and Sciences, Emory Graduate Diversity Fellowship, and Woodruff) receive twelve monthly payments regardless of the program they are enrolled in.

Students receiving graduate school stipends may be required to work without additional compensation if this work is required of all students in the program as part of the degree requirements.

Student Support and Tax Liability
Unless students are exempt under Internal Revenue Code (IRS) Section 117, scholarships, fellowships, grants, stipends and awards are generally considered taxable income.  Students are required to report these amounts on federal and state income tax returns and are advised to consult tax advisers or the IRS and state revenue authorities for additional information.

Merit Awards and Employment Restrictions
The terms of a merit award (a fellowship carrying a stipend) made by the graduate school may prevent a graduate student from gaining employment.  A student who receives a stipend should consult with his/her director of graduate studies and obtain the permission of the Dean of the Graduate School before accepting employment concurrently with the receipt of a merit award.

Disbursement of Stipend Payments

Electronic Direct Deposit
Stipends are paid in monthly installements on the last working day of each month.

In order to receive funds, all students on stipend must enroll in direct deposit.

Several days before funds are deposited into accounts, the University will send email notification that payment has been processed.  The email contains a link to an electronic copy of the check stub.  Please note that funds will be deposited not on the day the email notification is sent but on the final working day of the month.

Research and Conference Travel Funding

Professional Development Support Funds
The Graduate School makes available funds to support specific categories of graduate student professional development.  These funds are awarded on the basis of the merit of the proposed activity and the importance of the activity to the student’s program of study.  Awards are made in three funding categories: (1) conference participation, (2) supplementary training not available at Emory, including language acquisition, and (3) research.  The general policy for the funds is described here, and information about applying for funds can be found on the Forms page.
