Epidemiology

Degree: PhD

Epidemiology Program

Objectives: The goal of the PhD Program in Epidemiology is to educate and train academic epidemiologists. Starting from their first semester in the program, students are provided numerous opportunities for challenging research projects and experiences not only through collaborating with department faculty, but also through the department’s close ties with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Carter Center of Emory University, the Georgia Division of Public Health, the Emory University School of Medicine, the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University and the American Cancer Society. Our research-oriented faculty is committed to excellence in teaching. Close mentor relationships between the students and faculty are encouraged and facilitated through our low student-faculty ratio, particularly in classes geared towards doctoral students.

Additional Information: Our curriculum has a strong focus on epidemiologic methods and analysis. Particular areas of faculty interest include: infectious disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurologic disease, reproductive and women's health, children's health, environmental and occupational health, and epidemiologic methods. To be considered for admission, applicants must demonstrate excellent analytic skills and quantitative abilities. Coursework prerequisites include a strong science background (e.g. biology, chemistry) and college-level calculus. Although not required, preference is given to applicants who have completed a masters degree. All applicants are required to take the GRE. International applicants are required to take the TOEFL. A minimum of 550 is needed on the TOEFL to be considered for admission.
