History

Degree: PhD

History Program

Objectives: The History Department at Emory offers a moderately sized, well-focused PhD program in seven fields: Medieval European, Early Modern European, Modern European, American, Colonial Latin American, Modern Latin American, and African History. Students may pursue minor fields in the seven PhD fields listed or in Ancient History, Comparative Women's History, East Asian History, the History of Science, Middle Eastern History, Jewish History, Comparative History of Labor, Industrialization and Technology and Comparative Slavery and Serfdom. Under certain circumstances students may also design a minor field that focuses on an area of special interest.

Additional Information: The program has several attractive features. One is its congeniality. Classes are small; students work closely with faculty members and each other; there is a strong sense of community. In conjunction with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the department offers a special Teaching Assistant Training and Teaching Opportunity program (TATTO) which culminates in every student designing and teaching an independent course. Intellectual life on campus is lively, with a great many visiting lecturers and interdisciplinary seminars and programs. The Woodruff Library has excellent collections in most fields of history. The new Center for Library and Information Systems features state-of-the-art computer facilities and online information services.
