Mathematics
Degree/s: MS, PhD
Objectives: Applicants to the PhD program are expected to have an undergraduate major in mathematics, computer science, or a related field. In special circumstances, an applicant without sufficient background may be admitted, but they will then be required to make up deficiencies during the first year in the program. The program is designed so that students may complete the basic course and exam requirements during the first two years of enrollment and take elective courses and establish relationships with individual faculty members as early as their first year. Indeed, the moderate size of the faculty and PhD program allows considerable interaction among students and faculty. This is further encouraged by regular research seminars and colloquia in which faculty, visitors, and students present talks.
The MS degree in computer science provides a strong background and experience in computer science and related mathematics. Graduates of the program have found that the degree offers access to exciting and diverse career opportunities, and a firm foundation for doctoral study elsewhere.
Additional Information: The department is committed to graduate student teaching. Almost all PhD students teach one course each semester as their teaching assistant duty after their first year in the department. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences provides a week-long teaching assistant training course each summer which our PhD students attend between their first and second years. Excellence in teaching is also supported by a semester-long Teaching Seminar organized by the department each spring.
