Music
Degree(s): M.M., M.S.M.
Objectives: The Music Department awards the Master's of Music and the Master's of Sacred Music. Candidates for the M.M. may focus in Organ Performance or Conducting. Those wishing to pursue the M.S.M have a unique opportunity. Few universities possess the theological faculty and research capabilities, a music faculty with keen interests in sacred music and performance, the interdisciplinary ethos, and the musical resources of a large metropolitan area that characterize Emory University. All students in the M.S.M. program are required to participate in a supervised internship for a minimum of one semester. This requirement can be fulfilled within the context of a professional position in a church or synagogue. The supervisory board, whose faculty is drawn from the Department of Music and the Candler School of Theology, will evaluate the student in this practical setting.
Additional Information: Auditions are required for all applicants. Audition dates include the last Mondays in October, January, and February. Applicants must audition in person and will be scheduled for an interview and sight-reading. Placement exams in Music History and Music Theory will be given at the beginning of each semester, and review courses may be required for students who do not meet the minimum requirements.
