Nursing Program

Objectives: Initiated in 1999, Emory University's Ph.D. in Nursing Program is designed to develop nurse researchers who desire to create knowledge to improve nursing and healthcare. The Ph.D. in Nursing integrates the traditional science of nursing with emerging content from the associated fields of health outcomes research, ethics, and health policy to build new knowledge for health care delivery. Students will develop and test theory for pertinent health and care-delivery problems, including symptom and self management. The program prepares nurse scholars to participate in developing new patient-care practices that improve health outcomes and enhance the quality of life. This knowledge will inform and support the science of nursing and expand the boundaries of the discipline within the changing healthcare environment.

Additional Information: The curriculum draws upon the strengths of Emory University and may include coursework in the humanities, the health, natural and social sciences, business, law, and theology in addition to nursing. The four year, full-time, curriculum consists of required courses in nursing, research, and electives designed to give each student grounding in his/her area of specialization for a minimum of 49 semester hours. Additional research and teaching experiences are integrated into years three and four.
