Physics Program
Objectives: The graduate program in the Department of Physics offers students a comprehensive graduate education in physics and the opportunity to engage in experimental or theoretical research with internationally-recognized groups. The program values and promotes individual attention to students and collegial interactions among students, staff and faculty, all of which lead to a vibrant classroom and research environment. The mission of the Department of Physics graduate faculty is to develop outstanding scientists.
Research Activities: The experimental research in the department is focused in two principal areas: molecular biophysics and soft condensed matter physics. Molecular biophysics addresses the contributions of molecular structure and dynamics to biological function. Soft condensed matter physics addresses the properties of materials that display both fluid and solid properties. Theoretical statistical and thermal physics augments the soft condensed matter and biophysics areas, and extends the range of inquiry into materials growth, critical phenomena, evolutionary dynamics and optimization. Other activities include theoretical studies of semiconductor heterostructures and opto-electronic devices, and the formation of the early universe.
