Graduate School Stipends and Tuition Scholarships
Types of Support
The Graduate School generally awards two types of support to students: tuition scholarships and stipends. In addition, the Graduate School awards several special fellowships to outstanding first year students. For more information about these special fellowships, please refer to the Special Fellowships page on our website.
Tuition Scholarships
Tuition scholarships may cover partial or full tuition. These scholarships are awards for tuition credits only. They are not cash and cannot be awarded as stipend dollars.
Students cannot be required to work for tuition scholarships unless this work is required of all students in the department as part of the degree requirements.
Stipends
Stipends are paid monthly on the last working day of the month.
Students in the following programs receive nine monthly payments—from September through May: Art History, Behavioral Sciences and Health Education, Comparative Literature, Economics, Educational Studies, English, Epidemiology, French, Health Services Research and Health Policy, History, ILA, Jewish Studies, Mathematics & Computer Science, Music, Nursing, Philosophy, Political Science, Graduate Division of Religion, Sociology, Spanish, and Women’s Studies.
Students in the following programs receive twelve monthly payments—from September through August: Anthropology, Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Biostatistics, Business, Chemistry, Physics, and Psychology.
Recipients of special Graduate School fellowships (Arts and Sciences, Emory Graduate Diversity Fellowship, and Woodruff) receive twelve monthly payments—from September through August.
Students receiving graduate school stipends may be required to work without additional compensation if this work is required of all students in the program as part of the degree requirements.
Tuition Assistance Grants (TAG) for Professional Improvement in
Educational Studies
These tuition grants are intended to provide assistance for further training to elementary and secondary school teachers. Tuition assistance grants will be awarded to persons who have been admitted to a program leading to a master’s degree in education (MA, MEd, MAT) or to the Diploma for Advanced Study in Teaching (DAST). Students in special standing and advanced standing are usually not eligible.
Student Tax Liability
Unless exempt under Internal Revenue Code (IRS) Section 117, scholarships, fellowships, grants, stipends and awards are generally considered taxable income. Students are required to report these amounts on federal and state income tax returns and are advised to consult tax advisers or the IRS and state revenue authorities for additional information.
Employment Restrictions
The terms of a merit award made by the graduate school may prevent a graduate student from gaining employment. A student should consult with his/her director of graduate studies and obtain the permission of the dean of the graduate school before accepting employment concurrently with the receipt of a merit award.
