Support Our Scholars
“Without contact with graduate students, the college student does not see the whole of the academic enterprise.”
Professor David Lynn, Department of Chemistry
Graduate students are an essential part of the research, teaching and service missions of Emory University. Outstanding graduate students stimulate and enhance the research activities of faculty, and contribute directly to the growth of knowledge through their own research. They provide undergraduates with an invaluable link to the world of graduate studies, and they bring fresh results and enthusiasm from the frontiers of research into the college classroom.
Central to several of Emory’s academic programs, such as ORDER (On Recent Discoveries of Emory Researchers), PRISM (Problems and Research to Integrate Science and Mathematics), SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Program at Emory), and SIRE (Summer Inquiry and Research at Emory), is the active participation of graduate students working as teachers, researchers and mentors. In many cases the work of our graduate students in such programs extends beyond Emory’s borders and reaches students in area liberal arts institutions and educators in local public and private schools.
Finally as engaged citizens concerned about the issues facing the world today, our students continuously seek ways to make significant contributions to society. They are often actively involved in various community service and non-profit organizations. Their desire to use new-found knowledge and skills for the public good provides the driving force behind several fellowship programs sponsored by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences through collaborative partnerships with various offices and centers across campus, such as the Office of University-Community Partnerships (OUCP), the Center for Health, Society and Culture, and the Center for the Study of Public Scholarship. Through these fellowships our graduate students learn to translate theory into practice and to use their research, teaching, and mentoring skills to better the world. In short, our graduate students shape the face of scholarship and set a course for positive change in the world.
