Every year, University Housing offers students a variety of activities to enhance their on-campus experience. These activities have become annual events at Emory and students love them!

Some events include:
Songfest
Freshmen Semi-Formal
Hall Decorating Contest
Last Lecture Series
RHA Fall Fiesta
Crystal Apple Teaching Awards
Superbowl Party
Crime Prevention

Songfest
Songfest - Songfest is held on the first Thursday evening after classes begin, and is a knockdown, drag-out competition between the freshman residence halls. Each hall is taught a song by their Sophomore Advisors, and after many hours of practicing, the students perform their routines for a panel of judges. The judges include individuals representing Emory students, faculty, and staff. Songfest is rarely understood until one can see the hundreds of students, all dressed in their hall t-shirts, cheering and screaming with pride in a way that is rarely matched in their college experience. The winner receives bragging rights that will last well into their senior year, and often beyond.

Semiformal

Freshmen Semi-Formal - This annual event is one of the highlights of a student’s freshman year. First-year students have the chance to dress up, be transported via bus to an off campus location (past locations include the Fox Theatre, the Atlanta History Museum and Fernbank Museum of Natural History), and enjoy an evening of dancing and socializing with their entire class. Close to 1000 first-year students attend this party and it is an event to remember.

decorate Hall Decorating Contest - At the beginning of the year the Residence Life Staff participates in a hall-decorating contest the Friday before student orientation begins. Each Residence Hall staff invents a theme for their hall, and each floor is decorated with the chosen theme in mind. The staff uses creativity, originality, and aesthetic appeal to decorate their hall for the residents and their families. The beautiful displays in every building welcome the students, make them feel at home, and hopefully win over the judges. The halls are judged on their decorations and there are many different categories of competition. Past categories include: best welcome banner, best overall residence hall, best individual floor, and best theme throughout the building.

Last Lecture Series

Last Lecture Series - The Last Lecture Series is an annual program sponsored by the Residence Life Office. Students across campus are asked to nominate their favorite and most influential faculty members to speak during the lecture series. The nominated faculty members are asked to speak to the population at a large discussing any topic they wish. The premise of the lecture is that it is their very last lecture to give. Some faculty, discuss topics in their discipline and others talk about life, teaching, and the world today. This event has become an Emory tradition, one in which students living on and off campus come to hear the honored last lectures of the year.

Fall Fiesta

RHA Fall Fiesta - The Residence Hall Association kicks off its year with a week of events in early October. The executive board plans several campus-wide events, such as luaus and movie nights, while the individual hall councils also plan events one night during the week. It’s a great way to have some fun before the first round of midterms hit!

Crystal Apples

Crystal Apple Teaching Awards - The Residence Hall Association is honored to sponsor the "Crystal Apples." The 'apples' are the single most important accolade presented to faculty by students for their exceptional teaching ability. Blue ribbon panels of students select recipients in 8 categories. An elaborate dinner is held in the spring semester each year in which the honorees are feted and asked to speak in individual acceptance remarks. The title accurately describes the award presented to each faculty recipient, a crystal apple with stem that sits proudly atop a flat black onyx base.

Superbowl Party

Superbowl Party - This annual Superbowl party is a very popular event among students. All students are welcome to enjoy the game on two big screen televisions in Winship Ballroom. The ballroom is decorated in the competing teams' colors and delicious food is provided. Residence Life also gives away door prizes for everyone to enjoy! This event allows students from all over campus to gather and watch the big game together. Even if you don’t like football, this is a party you won’t want to miss!
