Student Activity & Academic Center: ADULT SWIM - NEW FOR SUMMER 2011

May 15-Sept 5: Adult Swim Only will occur every hour, on the hour, for 10 minutes. We want to encourage all parents to take their children to the bathroom, change swim diapers in the locker rooms, reapply sunscreen, and rest for 10 minutes. Lifeguards will blow their whistles and have all children exit the pool who are not in supervised programming (i.e. swim lessons) for a break.

All children involved in swimming lessons and swim team will be with instructors and coaches and will remain in the programming.

Mon-Fri: After 6:00pm on the hour-Adult Swim will occur
Sat/Sun: All day on the hour-Adult Swim will occur

All patrons who currently have a locker during the winter/fall season (April 1 through October 25) will be expiring at the end of this month.
Please read the following information regarding locker policies & procedures.
All locker renewals should be handled at the Information Desk at the Student Activity & Academic Center.

Renewal Period: Thursday, October 14 through Sunday, October 24
If you currently have a locker and would like to renew for the fall/winter season, please do so during the dates above.
Lockers not renewed after this time period will be cleaned out and disinfected.

Locker Cleanout Period: Monday, October 25
If you currently have a locker, but do not plan on renewing please remove your belongings before Sunday, October 24.
All items removed from lockers will be kept at the Student Activity & Academic Center for 14 days.
After this 14 day period all items will be donated to the Salvation Army/Goodwill.
There will be a $5.00 repossession fee for all items collected by a patron during this 14 day time period.

Student Activity & Academic Center: WPEC Pool Notice

The Student Activity & Academic Center would like to update our annual members on the renovation process that will effect your membership to the Woodruff Physical Education Center (WPEC) during the months of December and January. We realize the pool closure will be an inconvenience in the short term, but we are fully confident this will benefit your membership in to the future.

The Department of Athletics hired a pool consultant to complete a thorough evaluation of the WPEC aquatic facility during spring 2009. This assessment was completed by Counsilman-Hunsaker, one of the most widely respected authorities in the US on commercial and institutional aquatics facilities. The study yielded a long list of recommendations for the WPEC pool and recently, the University approved some funding to complete the most critical items. These critical items primarily involve mechanical systems that will enhance the water and air quality while improving efficiency of operations. The pool will require less chlorine, the water and air quality will remain more stable, and the cost to run the pool will be reduced.

The Emory University Campus Services Department (CS) will provide oversight for the project and work will commence over the upcoming winter break. The upgrades targeted for completion during winter break can be done without draining the pool, but do require that the major systems that filter and heat the water be turned off. The second phase of the work will require that the pool be completely drained and July - August have been targeted for completing the remainder of the funded improvements. This first phase will require that the pool be closed to our users during winter break from December 16-January 11.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause to members. The long-term results will be a benefit to all our users since these improvements will provide a more comfortable and consistent swimming environment. We appreciate your patience as we work to complete these critical facility improvements.

Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act: FEDERAL SWIMMING POOL & SPA DRAIN COVER STANDARD

The Student Activity & Academic Center has installed American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) drains in the Baby Pool, Teaching Pool, and Olympic Pool that are in full compliance with this federal act. On December 19, 2007, the President signed into law the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, named after the daughter of Nancy Baker and the granddaughter of former Secretary of State James Baker. Graeme Baker died in a tragic incident in June 2002 after the suction from a spa drain entrapped her under the water. This Act was first introduced by Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (FL) and was supported by the Baker family and Safe Kids Worldwide.

There is an annual average of 283 drowning deaths (2003-2005) and 2,700 emergency room-treated submersion injuries (2005-2007) involving children younger than 5 in pools and spas. In addition, from 1997-2007, there were 74 reported incidents associated with suction entrapment, including 9 deaths and 63 injuries. The new law is aimed at reducing these deaths and injuries by making pools safer, securing the environment around them, and educating consumers and industry on pool safety.

The Act specifies that on or after December 19, 2008, swimming pool and spa drain covers available for purchase in the United States must meet specific performance requirements. Additionally, public swimming pools, wading pools, spas and hot tubs must meet requirements for installation of compliant drain covers. New drain covers which meet the current standard are now beginning to make their way into the marketplace. Additionally, in certain instances, public pools and spas must have additional devices or systems designed to prevent suction entrapment.

The Student Activity & Academic Center will be the host location for Celebration Emory beginning Monday, September 15, 2008 and ending Monday, October 1, 2008.

President James W. Wagner and incoming Emory Alumni Board President Crystal Edmonton 95C will guide you through a brief showcase of Emory's courageous efforts to enlighten, care, connect, listen, discover, and give. Celebrate Emory's great strengths: scholars and scientists, innovations and inventions, programs, and partnerships. And learn about Emory's bold plans to share knowledge, care for communities at home and abroad, connect with the environment, and discover new solutions to enduring problems.

The featured entertainment is Enquérir (to inquire), an original production that explores the origin, challenges, and ultimate triumph of courageous inquiry at Emory. An international cast of renowned cirque-style acrobats journey through an ideal powerful enough to inspire positive change in the world. These acrobats have been featured in productions by Cirque du Soleil, the Moscow Circus, and NBC's Celebrity Circus. They will be accompanied by exhilarating live Taiko-fusion music, as well as local dancers and performers.

During this exciting time for the University we ask our patrons of the Student Activity & Academic Center to please be patient as this event could affect your regularly scheduled visits to our facility. While the facility will be open on Thursday, September 25, 2008 it is strongly encouraged that patrons use the facility prior to 4:00pm.

Student Activity & Academic Center: 2008 Fall Semester Fitness Classes

The Student Activity & Academic Center has released its 2008 Fall Semester Fitness Class schedule. There will be two minor location changes during the semester. On August 27, 2008 fitness classes will be held in Rm 316. From September 22 through September 29 all fitness classes will be held in the "H" Space on the Clairmont Campus.

Student Activity & Academic Center Olympic Pool - OPEN

The Student Activity & Academic Center Olympic Pool is looking better this morning. The diving well will remain closed until the water clarity gets back to normal, but the shallow end and lap lanes will open as scheduled.
If we have any other announcements regarding the Olympic Pool this weekend we will keep you informed.

Student Activity & Academic Center Olympic Pool - CLOSED

The Student Activity & Academic Center Olympic Pool is closed due to a filtration issue. The filtration issue began around 5:00pm on Friday, June 27 and the pool was closed at 5:30pm. At this time the management staff is accessing the situation and trying to get the pool operational by tomorrow morning.

The Student Activity & Academic Center staff will post an update tomorrow morning Saturday, June 28 at 9:00am.

The Teaching Pool and Baby Pool will remain operational during this time.

We are sorry for the inconvenience and are trying to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

DeKalb County Swim League (DCSL) Championship at WoodPEC

There have been many questions regarding the location of the Clarimont Cudas' DeKalb County Swim League (DCSL) Championship. It will be hosted at the Woodruff Physical Education Center (WoodPEC) on the main campus of Emory University. The Student Activity & Academic Center will NOT be the host site for this event. Clairmont Cudas Swim Team - Home Meet - Pool Closure 6:00pm until 9:00pm.

The Clairmont Cudas Swim Team will host its second of two home meets this coming Tuesday, June 10, 2008 from 6:00pm until 9:00pm. The Olympic Pool, Teaching Pool, and Baby Pool will be closed during this event. If you are planning on using any of the other indoor or outdoor facilities please prepare for large crowds.
This will be the last pool closure due to swim team for the rest of the summer.

The Emory University Alumni Association and Residence Hall Association will be sponsoring the Senior Luau for all 2008 graduating seniors on Thursday, May 8, 2008. This event will be only be open to graduating seniors and the Student Activity & Academic Center's Lower Terrace, Olympic Pool, Teaching Pool, and Baby Pool will be closed from 12:00pm until 6:00pm on Thursday, May 8, 2008. The rest of the facility will remain accessible for open recreation.

University Athletic Association (UAA) 200 Men's Tennis Championships.

The Student Activity & Academic Center will play host to the University Athletic Association 2008 Men's Tennis Championship on Friday, April 25; Saturday, April 26; and Sunday, April 27. Teams from Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, New York University, University of Chicago, University of Rochester, and Washington University in St. Louis will be represented in the tournament.

Please come out and support your Emory Eagles!

Hard Court Open Recreation:
Friday, April 25 - hard courts will be open for reservations after 6:00pm.
Saturday, April 26 - hard courts will NOT be open for reservation on this day.
Sunday, April 27 - hard courts will be open for reservations after 6:00pm.

Clay Court Open Recreation:
The clay tennis courts will NOT be used for tournament play.
They will remain open for recreation use the entire weekend.

The Student Activity & Academic Center's gymnasium will be closed on Saturday, April 12 beginning at 2:00pm and will re-open on Monday, April 14 at 10:00am. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we ask that all patrons relocate to the outdoor basketball court as an alternate means of open recreation basketball. Residence Life & Housing will be conducting their annual RA training for the upcoming semester.

Spring Band Concert hosted at the Student Activity & Academic Center's Recreation Field.

The Spring Band concert will be held at the Student Activity & Academic Center's recreation field on Tuesday, April 8 from 8:00pm until 10:30pm. This year's headlining band is Lupe Fiasco.

The Student Activity & Academic Center will remain OPEN during the concert, but please remember there will be live music and gathering crowds in and around the Student Activity & Academic Center.

DeKalb County makes an Official Announcement regarding the Summer Extended Season.

DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer, Vernon Jones, announced on Friday, March 28, 2008 that DeKalb County could fill their swimming pools beginning Tuesday, April 1, 2008. This announcement comes as GREAT NEWS to the Student Activity & Academic Center as questions and worries surrounded the fate of the Summer Swim Season 2008.

As a result of this announcement the Student Activity & Academic Center will begin selling swim and summer memberships online and in-person beginning Monday, March 31, 2008. The Student Activity & Academic Center pool will officially open on Monday, April 7, 2008 at 12:00pm.

DeKalb County is still following the prior exemption which would not allow us to open a public or private pool in the county for the swim season of 2008. DeKalb County does not know when they will make a decision regarding this matter.

We ask that you please contact The DeKalb County Commissioners Office & our local legislators to help the efforts of the Student Activity & Academic Center and DeKalb County pools to open for the swim season of 2008.

At this time the Student Activity & Academic Center is tentatively planning on selling our swim and summer memberships beginning March 1, 2008.
