F 214 – Warren Akin Candler (1888-1898)
Warren Akin Candler, a member of the class of 1875, was the associate editor of the Christian Advocate, the preeminent Southern Methodist publication of the time, and well positioned to succeed to the senior editor position in time. Happy with his work, Candler did not aspire to be president of Emory. However, when elected by the Board just before his 31st birthday, he was willing to serve his alma mater. A “boy wonder,” Candler had entered Emory at the age of 15 and was the first person to receive five degrees from Emory - four of them were honorary.

Under Candler’s presidency and for the first time in Emory College history, the institution was financially solvent. Candler stepped down from his position as president in 1898 when he was selected as bishop of the Methodist church. In 1920, he became chancellor of Emory.

The Candler apartment is located in the Graduate Residential Center. This spacious two bedroom, two bath apartment is 1,017 square feet in size.
