H301 – James Edward Dickey (1902-1915)
James Dickey was a member of the class of 1891, and was the last president to serve Emory in Oxford. Dickey established a number of ambitious goals at the beginning of his presidency, and went on to fulfill nearly all of them. Under Dickey’s administration, the debt on Candler Hall was paid off, and a gymnasium and a science hall named for President Pierce were constructed. He also managed a significant growth in enrollment and built Haygood Hall, the first traditional residence hall on campus, in 1912.

Dickey also oversaw the recreation of the law school and the creation of the theology department during his tenure as president.
