E 216 – Osborn L. Smith (1871-1875)
Osborne L. Smith, a member of Emory’s second graduating class (1842), served as a high school principal before returning to Emory as a professor of Latin. Osborne L. Smith succeeded Luther M. Smith (unrelated) as the seventh president of Emory University.

During Smith’s presidency, he oversaw the construction of four new buildings on campus, despite the economic difficulties at Emory and in the nation in general. Smith was always more at home in the classroom than as an administrator, and served as president for just four years before returning to his faculty position.

The Smith apartment is located in the Graduate Residential Center. This spacious two bedroom, two bath apartment is 1,017 square feet in size.
