Resident Hall Director Fellow
The Residence Life program at Emory University strives to enhance the total development
of students as individuals, as well as members of the community. The Residence
Hall Director (RHD) Fellow assists individual residents in developing their
personal, academic and social skills through programming efforts, role modeling,
acting as a resource and referral agent, and developing a community conducive
to living and learning within the residence hall.
- The RHD Fellow is responsible for the selection, training, supervision and evaluation
of Resident Assistants and Sophomore Advisors. In addition, the RHD Fellow acts as the
advisor to the Resident Hall Association (RHA) in his/her hall.
- The RHD
Fellow reports directly to the Area Director and assists
in promoting the concept of community within their residence
hall through staff development, training, programming and administrative
functions.
- The RHD Fellow holds an appointment for one academic
year, from July to May.
- The RHD Fellow serves in another University
Department for approximately 20 hours a week.
- Be available and accessible to hall residents by making a strong commitment
to being present in the hall.
- Serve as a resource or referral for information
concerning University life.
- Know all the students in the residence
hall. Develop a positive rapport with residents in order to
create and maintain a friendly
atmosphere
that stimulates a cooperative environment conducive to studying
and group living.
- Encourage students to act with reason, to assume
responsibility for their actions and to be considerate of personal
and group rights
and
freedoms.

- Supervise a staff of 6 to 21 Resident Advisors (RA) and/or Sophomore Advisors (SA).
- Clearly and frequently define responsibilities and duties of
the RA and SA.
- Provide and present staff development and training
programs for all building staff.
- Provide consistent individual
supervision meetings for each RA and SA.
- Assist each RA/SA
in evaluating the necessary skills to do a thorough and competent
job. The evaluative process is
used
in rehiring, terminating and writing future recommendations,
as well as providing the RA/SA with appropriate and necessary
feedback.
- Keep the staff informed and updated on any information
and/or revisions concerning Residence Life & Housing and his/her hall through weekly staff meetings, and regular one to one
meetings.
- Maintain open communication lines with groups and
individuals.
- Assist with the Residence Life & Housing student staff selection process.
- Identify, encourage, and assist student leaders within the hall to formulate
a Resident Hall Association (RHA).
- Advise the hall RHA in order
to provide an effective student government program.
- Assist
RHA in planning and implementing educational, cultural and
social activities in the hall. Show support by attending
these functions.
- Attend the EURHA training conference in
the Fall semester.
- Attend monthly RHA Advisor meetings.
- Attend weekly staff meetings and regular one to one meetings with the Area Director.
- Coordinate
the opening, closing and break coverage of the residence
hall during all breaks and at the beginning and
end of each semester.
- Assist in room inspections prior to
closing for breaks to ensure proper health, safety and maintenance
conditions
of
each residence hall room.
- Maintain residence hall budget
so there is not deficient spending.
- Maintain accurate office
records (i.e. check-in/check-out forms, room change forms,
and staff files, etc.)
- Conduct resident occupancy checks to
update building rosters.
- Issue and maintain control of all
keys.
- Communicate regularly with the housekeepers and housing
operations personnel; report routine and special
maintenance needs.

- Plan and implement at least two hall-wide program each semester.
- Develop and implement
a programming model that includes activities to promote
a sense of community within the hall,
residential area, and University.
- Be a campus and community
resource for students and staff by advising, providing
guidance in planning programs
and
activities, and providing resources for passive programming.
- Encourage
students to make the most of their University experience
by emphasizing awareness of various possibilities
for learning and activity.
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and show consistency and thoroughness in defining University
policies and procedures.
- Interpret and enforce all residence
hall and University policies and regulations.
- Consult with
professional staff members on conduct action as appropriate.
- Serve
as a University Conduct Hearing Officer in conjunction
with the Office of Student Conduct.

- Provide counseling or referral for residents with academic, career or personal
concerns.
- Respond directly to crisis situations. Assist
in the direction of paraprofessional staff and ensure
reporting of information in a timely and appropriate fashion.
- Provide
scheduled area wide on call coverage to handle emergency
situations as assigned.This on-call coverage
will include being accessible by pager for any emergency
situations.
- Serve in a University department for approximately 20 hours per week as an intern.
- Maintain
confidentiality in all matters related to residents and
student staff.
- Maintain clear communication lines with the
Residence Life & Housing professional staff.
- Act as a public relations agent for the Office of
Residence Life & Housing in a positive manner.
- Duties as assigned by Area Directors, Associate
Directors and Director of Residence Life.
