Resident Advisor
Job Description
The Resident Advisor (RA) is a full-time, undergraduate student who – under the supervision and direction of the Residence Hall Director – serves as an educator, counselor, administrator, role model, friend, and team member for the residents of a floor or wing in a residence hall. The RA works to create and maintain a healthy environment for the academic and personal growth of the students within their assigned living unit. In carrying out his or her duties, the RA is expected to treat other students, supervisors, and fellow employees with courtesy and respect.
Programming & Community Development
- Encourage student involvement in shaping community in the building.
- Be knowledgeable enough about university resources to help students find their niche in the wider campus community.
- Be regularly available and accessible to address residents needs or concerns.
- Perform as a mediator in conflicts among residents and staff, within the limits of personal capabilities. Refer to the supervisor if necessary.
- Work cooperatively with residents to ensure an environment that displays respect for the rights and privacy of others and promotes consideration of individual needs in a group living environment.
- Respond appropriately to students in crisis--physical, emotional, etc.— through assessment, referral to experienced professionals and follow-up.
- Understand and educate residents about University and Residence Hall policies and regulations.

Training & Meetings
- Be available to attend weekly Monday night staff meetings. No commitment outside of academics will be considered before this meeting.
- Meet at least monthly with his/her supervisor.
- Participate in all Selection, Training, and Evaluation Processes as deemed appropriate by the supervisor or the Office of Residence Life & Housing.

Administrative Responsibilities
- Deliver and/or post all flyers and campus information on a daily basis.
- Do not speak to the media, press, or parents in the official capacity of a Resident Advisor for the Office of Residence Life & Housing or Emory University without permission from their supervisor.
- Preserve the confidentiality of personal information about students obtained in the course of employment and responsible treatment of all information to which s/he is given access (rosters, locator cards, etc.).
- Check and respond when appropriate to voicemail and email daily.
- Complete all paperwork as assigned by the supervisor and submit them in a timely manner.

Policy Enforcement
- Abide by and enforce all University rules, regulations and policies.
- Comply with the policies and procedures contained in the most current versions of the Resident Advisor Job Description, Community Living Standards on the Housing and Residential Education website and expectations and guidelines of the supervising Community/Residence Director. The RA is subject to the same disciplinary sanctions as other residents for violation of residence hall rules as set on the Community Living Standards on the Residence Life & Housing website or any other applicable University rule and regulation. In addition, the RA may be subjected to staff discipline, including termination, if the behavior that violated rules, regulations, or policies also call into question his/her fitness to be a RA.
- Be responsible for thorough and accurate documentation of all violations of Residence Hall Policies, Regulations, and University Code of Conduct.

Role Modeling & Attitude
- Convey a positive attitude towards the RA position and its duties and responsibilities.
- Comply with the University's sexual harassment and non-discrimination policies involving both fellow staff members and residents.
- Act as a positive role model both for fellow staff members and residents by not participating in questionable or unethical behavior.
- Treat fellow employees and students with courtesy and respect.

Community Duty Coverage
- Assume scheduled on call duty responsibility at night, on weekends, during break periods when the University and building/community remains open, and during hall openings and closing to ensure proper coverage as determined by the supervisor.
- Fulfill extra duty coverage on major Campus/Community Special Events (including, but not limited to Dooley’s Ball, Freshmen Semiformal, Fall Break, Spring Break, etc).
