Appeals should be submitted in one of the following categories:
GENERAL INFORMATION | FIRST OR SECOND-YEAR HOUSING REQUIREMENT | PRIOR TO MOVE IN | ACADEMIC YEAR RELEASES
Students who sign up for campus housing should do so with the sincere intent
and plan to live in campus housing. Signing up for campus housing is not a "safety
net" while looking at other options. If you are eligible to and would like to
explore other options, please do so; we will be happy to assist you in securing
on-campus housing at a later date if housing is available.
We acknowledge that situations can change and are open to receiving appeals for
release. Please know, however, that submitting an appeal does not
guarantee a release, no matter your reason for the appeal. Do NOT make other plans until you have been
notified of the outcome of your appeal.
Appeals to be released from housing are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Your Housing Appeal must be submitted via your MyHousing page. Please log on to your page and click the left-hand navigation link "Request a Housing or Commuter Appeal".
Please note that all appeals will be reviewed within three weeks of being received.
All releases are subject to a cancellation and/or release fee.
The University’s commitment to residential education requires that
the Office of Residence Life & Housing provide housing for all
first-year and second-year
students. The second-year requirement applies to all students,
whether continuing, returning from any type of leave, or students
transferring to Emory as second-year students.
New and continuing students who wish to request an exemption from
this policy for Fall 2011 should submit a written request to
the Office of Residence
Life
& Housing
no later than May 1, 2011. Appeals received after that date will
not receive full consideration. Readmits and transfer
students should submit a written appeal within two weeks from
the date of their re/admission.
**Please note that appeals are rarely granted
and all first- and second-year students should plan to live on campus.
The "Reason For Appeal" portion of your form must include the following information:
• Narrative explaining the rationale for why you are requesting to be exempt
from the housing requirement. If no explanation is included, the appeal will
be considered incomplete and returned to you.
If your appeal is to live with your immediate family or a spouse, please include:
• The mailing address for the location at which you will be residing;
• The name of the parent/guardian with whom you are living OR the name of your spouse;
• If appealing to live with a spouse, a copy of the marriage
certificate must be submitted separately.
• If appealing to commute from your parent(s)/guardian(s)' home, a letter supporting the request from your parent/guardian must be submitted separately.
Please
note that appeals are rarely granted and all first-
and second-year students should plan to live on campus. Appeals may
be granted (but are not guaranteed) in the following
instances,
based
on documentation:
1) severe financial difficulties as confirmed
by the Office of Financial Aid, or
2) medical conditions Housing cannot accommodate as confirmed
by the Office of Disability Services, or
3) Family status: students who have custody of minor
children and/or who are married and living with
their spouse off-campus, or
4) Commuter: students who live with immediate family locally and
wish to commute from home.
If an appeal is granted and the student is released from his/her housing obligation,
a $200 cancellation fee and a termination fee if applicable will be charged to the student's account.
Questions regarding the
appeal
process may be directed to: housinghelp@learnlink.emory.edu.
