Living in Asbury House
The Asbury House is the theme house on Emory’s campus that houses the Student Experiment in Ecological Design (S.E.E.D.) Program. The idea of S.E.E.D. is to incorporate lifestyle and technological changes in order to decrease the environmental waste of the house and those who inhabit it in many different ways. The theme is designed to educate and excite people about the environment and how we can best adapt to a new wave of awareness. Some of the goals we hope to incorporate are: indoor and outdoor composting, reusing sink and shower water for flushing the toilette, "If it is yellow, let it mellow. If it is brown, flush it down," taking shorter showers, turning as many lights off as often as possible, volunteering at GIA gardens and maintaining a plot at a local community or school garden, learning to eat locally, organically, and seasonally, recycling/reusing everything possible, unplugging electrical items when not in use (i.e. toaster, lamps, phone chargers, computers), using only fluorescent light bulbs, etc. These practices will teach us all that living environmentally conscious is not difficult and hopefully set an example for homeowners around Atlanta, fellow students, and Emory staff and faculty. It is also important to note that such life style habits are by no means mandatory, but designed to influence voluntary and innovative life style changes that work best for individual residents. Another very important part of keeping a living space environmentally sound is weathering the house, solar heating, installing flow diffusing faucets, insulation, better wiring, etc. Residents will have to petition and earn funding for these projects. Because the house's progress depends heavily on the residents living in it, we ask that applicants are open-minded and interested in making a difference. The time requirement will not be too overwhelming. There will be mandatory meetings, weekly dinners, programs (such as camping or gardening), and house meetings to discuss the house, its progress, and ideas for further development. The agenda depends on resident determination and how they decide to pursue the goals of the house. Living in the S.E.E.D. house is an incredible learning experience, something residents can take with them after Emory, and lots of fun. The Asbury S.E.E.D. House was created by the Outdoor Emory Organization (OEO), the Emory Environmental Alliance, Emory as Place, and Slow Food Emory and is occasionally used for activities by these groups in addition to housing the OEO Equipment Shed.
