Your second year is an ideal time to research careers you are curious about. Learning about a career now can help you decide if it is a good fit for you, for your interests, and for your skills. By attending career-related events, you can also meet people and develop contacts who will give you more insight about the field.

Meeting the Challenge

To meet this challenge, you will need to participate in or attend a career-related program. The following examples could help you complete this challenge:

• Attending a networking night or a "How-to Network" program
• Attending an info session for a particular job field or company
• Info sessions for pre-professional programs (like pre-health, pre-business, or pre-law)
• Graduate school fairs or info sessions
• Attending an etiquette dinner
• Attending Emory Alumni or alumni-networking events: Dinner with Twelve Strangers

Helpful Resources

• Career Center
• Academic departments or other campus offices
• Academic adviors
• Faculty members connected with specific programs
• Emory Alumni Association
• Graduate school websites and offices

What comes next?

Broadening your professional contacts and skills can lead to several places.

• Use what you have learned to inform your coursework. Gaining more information about a job or field you are interested in could help you decide about declaring a major.
Follow up on the connections you make. Networking can connect you with internship, fellowships, and other opportunities you may not have been aware of.
• Get involved with the people you meet. People you meet through these events may be involved with activities you wan to explore.
Be prepared with a resume. If someone you meet is keenly interested in you and wants to follow up with you, it's a good idea to have a resume at the ready.
• Professionals who attend these events are generally well-connected with other people you meet can open doors to future job opportunities or new information.
