21 January 2008 - Volver
I can't believe it's a new semester! I'm actually really excited.
I'm taking three film classes and a linguistics class. Also, and this might
have been me, but I want to think at everyone wants to take some super obscure
class during college cause it's super obscure and then you're like, hell
yeah I know all about the immigration and emigration patterns of Honduras
and El Salvador during World War II. Now, if ever you want to know about
Film, Literature, and the Strategies of Freedom of East Central Europe with
an emphasis on Hungry, Poland and Czechoslovakia from 1960 - 1990, I'm your
man (or at least I will be by the end of this semester).
This week has been
pretty stress free, which is really nice. We haven't really had a lot of
work yet, so it's been a relaxing three day weekend. Definitely
the biggest news though is that it snowed!!! I know! I was really excited.
My roommate got pissed off and couldn't understand why I was walking outside
in the snow, which was ruining his car. He was upset. I was ecstatic. I
have never lived in a place where it snows. Sure, I've been skiing, and
I love
it, but there you expect it to snow. So, it was really exciting for me...even
if I realized very shortly that my clothes and dress were not anywhere
near warm enough for snow. Who cares? I could go on and on about this,
but apparently
everyone here hates snow and it's kind of taken me off the high horse I
was on.
There's not much else going on. Winter Break was fun. I went skiing
in Tahoe. It was nice to ski, but it was really bad. There hadn't been
new
snow in
weeks and it was all icy and rocky. I actually kind of ruined my skis
and it made me sad. I also cross country skied for the first time ever,
which
was fun, but really challenging. It didn't help that my mom and I didn't
have a map, so we ended up going on a nine mile loop that we hadn't planned
on. Needless to say, we were extremely tired after that. It was also
hard because my mom was complaining the whole time - which she said wasn't
complaining,
but concern. Whatever it was, coupled with the fact that I felt really
lost, it did not help. Everything became a lot better when we got lunch
afterward,
which I started off with a huge slice cinnamon coffee cake. It hit the
spot. Anyway, now I'm back, hence my title, which also serves as an homage
to my
man, Pedro Almodovar.
I am just about to watch American Beauty. I read
the script today for my scriptwriting class, and was reminded why I love
that film. It is
definitely
in my top ten films of all time. Probably top five. I don't really
know, since I've never made an official list. I just think that it's a
very
beautiful and an extremely insightful look on life. Every time I watch
it, I'm moved
to tears. Annette Benning is amazing and while I love Hilary Swank,
I honestly feel like she was snubbed by the Academy. Also, that would have
made American
Beauty the fourth movie to win the major five, and frankly, it deserves
it. And if you're reading this, and you disagree, you are entitled
to
your opinion,
even if it's wrong. That's it, American Beauty and I must be reunited,
so I have to go. Hope everyone is having a good January and had a great
break.
28 November 2007 - Crunch Time!!!
So the time between Thanksgiving
and Winter Break is definitely "make
it work time" - please someone get my Project Runway reference and
make me feel slightly better about watching too much TV. We literally
only have 3 weeks left of classes till finals, which is both exciting
and scary,
because that means that finals are way too close! Oh well, the best thing
to do is to stay calm and then freak out at reading day and blockade
yourself in the library...not that I would ever do that...
Well, I hope everyone
had a better Thanksgiving Break than me. I was sick. The whole time.
I got on the plane and had a sore throat and a fever which
eventually became the flu. In fact, I didn't even leave my house for
more than 15 minutes.
Thanksgiving itself was really fun too. I couldn't stay
awake and was falling asleep at the table. I also couldn't swallow anything
thanks to my sore throat, which brought on a lot of fun somewhat behind
my back remarks about me being potentially anorexic. I'm not kidding,
my grandmother and aunt are rather opinionated and suck at whispering,
so
I could hear them easier from the other end of the table. It all culminated
in everyone eating my favorite desert - an apple crisp. So I called it
a night and went back to watch Seinfeld. I plowed through through Seinfeld
episodes like no one's business. I got in most the classics too - The
Backwards Episode, The Close Talker, The Soup Nazi, Festivus, The Bubble
Boy and
of course The Contest. Sadly, I did not get to enjoy one of my favorite
traditions of being home, which is my parents taking me out to dinner
and the movies, because I stayed like an infected mess in my room. It was
not
fun. I'm still really tired and it's still not fun. My suggestion is
don't get sick while you're in college. It totally gets in the way of work
and
life.
Anyway, I'm going to go attempt to reclaim some energy and get in
a nap, which I've needed since an hour after waking up (and yes, I admit
that's
totally pathetic). Hopefully I'll be back in shape for the weekend
because I haven't seen any of my friends since getting back from Thanksgiving
break. Nap time :-).
Masalaam!
