The Sophomore Summit is a two-day long series of programs, panels, and presentations designed to provide you with information essential to your success this year at Emory. Introduction to Your Second Year at Emory

Time to get your second year started! This program officially starts the SYE Kickoff. Students will enjoy some snacks and refreshments as they hear about Second Year at Emory and the Kickoff schedule for the week. Also, students will receive a preview of events happening during their second year.

Choosing Your Major

Are you on the fence about a major? Come to this event to hear from the academic advisor in residence from the Office for Undergraduate Education about important steps to follow so that you can ultimately choose a major that is right for you. And about that 5-Year plan…no, we aren’t talking about super seniors. This part of the presentation will cover the importance of creating and executing an academic plan that factors in the year after graduation. It will also include useful tips on how to make your remaining 3 years prepare you for your plans for after college.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Learning in the classroom is important, but ultimately you will need to apply the knowledge and skills you develop outside the classroom. This is especially true in the area of research, and Emory has several programs to give students an opportunity to get hands-on research experience during their undergraduate career. Come learn about the opportunities that the Scholarly Inquiry and Research at Emory (SIRE) and Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) programs have to offer to second-year students.

Getting into the Business School

Rising juniors and seniors in the BBA Program will talk about courses that they took to prepare for admission to the program, as well as resources that they were able to use prior to entering the program. The students will also discuss choices of majors within the program, and talk about specific programs such as study abroad, career management, and clubs that are open to students in the program.

Who You Gonna Call? Stress Busters!

Hear how your peers did it and what they have learned from their experience.

Representatives from the Center for International Programs Abroad (CIPA) will offer tips on planning for a semester or summer abroad and provide answers to FAQs. Additionally, returning study abroad students will share stories from abroad and explain how the study abroad experience enhanced their undergraduate career. If you are thinking about studying abroad, this is a great program to start you on that path towards whichever country you choose.

Students must register for this program in advance by emailing SYDNEY BLOUNT (LL) before Monday, August 22 at 12 PM.
Learn more about yourself and your interests by signing up to take the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The MBTI is an extremely reliable character questionnaire that will help determine your personality based on four characteristics. Results from the assessment will give you insight into your individual strengths, interests, qualities and will help provide a foundation for thoughts about future choices of major and even interesting career paths!

Because law schools don’t have any academic pre-reqs, it can be easy to feel at a loss for knowing specifically what should be done to prepare. Well, have no fear…Emory’s Pre-Law Advisor is here! In this session, we’ll discuss the importance of the second year in preparing for law school and a legal career. Students will leave with a clear checklist of what they need to accomplish to stay on track for going to the law school of their dreams!

Internships: The Out-of-Classroom Experience

Hear from your peers about their experiences in various internships or research positions and get information from The Career Center about how you can do the same. A panel of your peers from a variety of experiential learning experiences (internships, shadowing, research) will discuss the ways they obtained their positions, what they learned, and how they plan to use the experience to better prepare for their professional futures. Don Cornwell, Associate Director at The Career Center, will be on hand to discuss the resources and services available to assist sophomores in identifying and being competitive candidates for opportunities.
