Emory University IACUC guidelines for the use of expired materials

Emory University follows guidance provided by the USDA in the Animal Care Policy #3, which states:

For acute terminal procedures, APHIS does not oppose the use of expired medical materials if their use does not adversely affect the animal's well-being or compromise the validity of the scientific study. Proper anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia are required for all such procedures. Drugs administered to relieve pain or distress and emergency drugs must not be used beyond their expiration date.

At Emory, this guidance applies to all species, including mice, rats and birds. Investigators using expired drugs or materials, exclusive of anesthetics or analgesics, must use them for terminal procedures only, and the drugs or materials must be clearly labeled. The IACUC requires writing “expired, terminal use only” on the package.

This policy was approved by the IACUC on March 19, 2008.
